WAVE ACTIONS

One of my favorite outdoor pastimes is to check out the waves around our shores in the Avalon peninsula.

With St. John’s and area located at the east point of North America, we have many storms occurring over the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Our shoreline is often swamped and pounded with these swells and surges.  We often attribute our high waves to the strong northeasterlies gale we get.  However, high surge can also be related to storm centres that can be hundreds of kilometres away.   This collection of waves can propagate and grow by the time they reach our shores from far distances.  When these amplified waves pound our shores, they crash and raise the sea level significantly; worse when during high tides, endangering lives of our seamen and fishermen.  On the other hand, don’t we love the beautiful drift woods we often get on our beaches when exploring along our hiking trails along the shore?  However, we have to be mindful of the danger and devastation that can be caused by these fierceless swells of these unexpected rogue waves.

I have watched waves in many places around town all year round.   Some of my favourite areas include Middle Cove, Cape Spear, Tors Cove or anywhere along our hiking trails along our eastern and southern shoreline.

STAY SAFE & ENJOY THE BEAUTIY IN OUR OCEANS, WAVES AND SHORELINE.
