Chess at the Library

Today,  in collaboration  with the help from our local chess players and our local AC Hunter library, we are able to host an "Introduction to Chess" session from 6pm  to 8 pm.  During the session, our players were able to show some new players the basic moves and the rules of the game.  Some of the participants knew some basics of the game already but were very delighted to have someone there to help with basic development strategies.

In the second half of the session, some more experienced players did take on the challenge to play against our top player Jian Wang.  Wang won the current Canadian title for Under 18 girl champion in 2017.  She also tied for 4th place at the  2017 Canadian Open event held in Sault Ste. Marie.   Wang is currently a grade 12 student at Holy Heart Of Mary School.

The night's event was well attended with about 20 participants.  Thanks to A.C. Hunter Library for inviting out Newfoundland Labrador Chess Association for this successful event.  At the end of the session, players were reminded about our regular Tuesday casual chess games at the University and also our Sunday late morning casual chess event at Chapters.

It was very positive to see so many women participants tonight.   Big thank you to all our regular players who came out to help out: Steve Martin, Nihad Dervicevic, Michael Pickard, Ryan Pickard, Ron O'Brien, Jian Wang, Brian Oliver.  We hope we will see tonight's players starting to pick up the games and play often at home or with us in the future.

THANK YOU to AC Hunter Library for launching this Chess event.
